Microgaming

There are a number of different factors that make one online casino better than another, but it usually boils down to the number of games available, and how good the software that runs those games is. A casino can live or dies based on the quality of its software, and the best provider in the business is Microgaming. Platinum Play has run their software from the moment they opened their virtual doors, and that quality shines through in every single game that you’ll play here.

When you look back on the evolution of online gaming, you’ll see that Microgaming was not only there from the start, but was also the first software company to introduce features that make online gambling what it is today, which is an exciting, secure way to get your gambling kick.

It all began in 1994 when Microgaming opened their first online casino, and once it became apparent that the industry was going to be huge, they were instrumental in setting up a number of rules and codes of conduct that all others had to quickly adhere to if they wanted to keep customers happy.

Most people who play at online casinos are drawn in by the huge jackpots that are now available, and that really began in the late 90’s when Microgaming linked together their casinos to create progressive jackpots, much like the ones found in the major land based casinos.

They also introduced the first flash based and multi-language casinos, which was a huge hit across the industry, and made the online casino industry into a truly global market.

It would be easy for Microgaming to rest on their laurels at this point, but they continue to strive to make online casino experience as fun and exciting as possible, and with new games being introduced on a weekly basis, it’s safe to say they are succeeding.

Dragon Lady

Themed slots games have always been a huge hit with casino players, and with one of the latest Platinum Play offerings, the theme takes a trip back in time to the beauty of Ancient China. The Dragon Lady 5 reel slot makes use of colourful, Oriental themed graphics, including some nice little animations, and soft background music to create a relaxing experience wrapped around a really exciting slots game.

The Dragon Lady will beckon you in with a wave of her fan and a bat of her eyelids, and once you get there you’ll find that there are betting options to suit every level of player. The coin range runs from 0.01 to 0.50, and with 40 different pay-lines, that can mean a maximum bet of 200 coins.

The payouts are fantastic, and when the Dragon Lady appears across all five enabled lines the big 5000 coin jackpot is triggered, but that’s not the only major payout available in the game. Keep an eye open for the Jewellery boxes as they trigger the bonus round where 10, 15 or even 20 free spins are randomly awarded, with all prizes hit during those spins being doubled.

In Ancient China, dragons were considered symbols of good luck, and that belief carries over into the game play, with 3 scatter symbols setting of the Dragon Bonus where the player gets to take part in an incredibly fun Chinese fortune game with the chance to win 100 times their total bet.

Platinum Play always goes out of their way to bring the freshest, most exciting slot experience to their players, and with Dragon Lady they have another certified hit on their hands. So, instead of hitting the local restaurant and looking for luck inside a cookie, create your own fortune by playing Dragon lady today.

How to earn points

Anyone who has been to Vegas, or who frequents a major casino, is probably well aware of the membership loyatly Rewards programmes that they run there. You basically sign up for a card which you use every time you play. Sounds great in principal, but unless you are a major player, you aren’t likely to get much more than a free cocktail for all your efforts.

Platinum Play has adopted the rewards programme idea, but has made it such that players can earn free casino credits, which is far more valuable to most players than a gin sling. Signing up for the programme is easy, and all that is required is depositing into a real cash account, which automatically sets you up in the Silver Level with 2500 points.

Every spin of the reels, flip of the cards, or bet at the tables automatically adds points to your account, which can either be cashed out for casino credits, or left to build until you have climbed the ladder all the way up to Diamond Level status.

Better yet, those points add up whether you win or lose, and are added at the rate of 1 loyalty point per credit wagered on slots games, and 1 loyalty point for every 5 credits wagered on table games. Once you hit 5000 points, and remember you get 2500 to start, you can cash out at a rate of 1 cash credit for every 1000 points. So basically, every time you play you are earning points that will earn you free plays down the line, but just remember to redeem those points within 60 days or they will expire.

Everyone loves a freebie, and at Platinum Play it doesn’t just end with their awesome deposit bonuses. Just imagine hitting a huge jackpot using one of your free cash credits; how sweet would that be?

Las Vegas dumbest city in US

A study conducted by Thedailybeast.com ranked Las Vegas as the dumbest city in America. This might highlight a direct link between reckless gambling, alcohol and stupidity.

The study was not the most scientific but it did make some interesting findings. The study combined a whole lot of variables that included how many of the city’s residents have university degrees, how many accredited post-secondary institutions there are in the city and the number of non-fiction books sold in the city.

Boston was ranked as the most intelligent city in the US. To compare, Boston got 176.68 and Vegas got 3.33. Then again, degrees and reading probably aren’t part of the Vegas party culture and which one of the above-mentioned cities do you think have more fun?

Have fun online at Platinum Play Online Casino.

Great gambling quotes

  • ‘Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.’  Steven Wright
  • ‘Listen, here’s the thing. If you can’t spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you ARE the sucker.’  The movie Rounders (1998)
  • ‘Yes, I think poker really isn’t gambling’.  Al Alvarez
  • ‘Bluffing. The word is bluffing.’  Charles Van Doren – Quiz Show (1994)
  • ‘Don’t try to eat these so called “chips.”‘ [Playing poker, choking on poker game chips] Homer Simpson
  • ‘I just want to get drunk, *fucked up*, and play some cards!’ David – 40 Year Old Virgin, 2005
  •  ’Gets down to what it’s all about, doesn’t it? Making the wrong move at the right time…Like life, I guess. You’re good, kid, but as long as I’m around you’re second best. You might as well learn to live with it.’ Lancey Howard – The Cincinnati Kid
  • ‘I’ve always had confidence, but I never let my ego get to the point that I think I’m the superstar, because I know that ego has destroyed many a poker career.’  The Mighty Puck
  • ‘Three card brag is a simple form of poker; you are dealt only three cards and these you can’t change. If you don’t look at your cards you’re a `blind man’ and you only put in half the stake. Three of any kind is the highest you can get: the odds are four hundred and twenty-five to one. Then it’s a running flush – you know, all the same suit running in order; then a straight, then a flush, then a pair, and finally whatever the highest card you are holding. There are some tell-tale signs that are valuable; I am not going to tell you them because it took me long enough to learn them, but these can only help a player, not make one. So you want to play?’ Eddie – Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Google announces new Android operating systems for smartphones

Google has just announced that the newest Android operating system for smartphones is set to have a few features that were previously only available to Android tablets.

The new system has been nicknamed “Ice Cream Sandwich” and should make its debut towards the end of 2011. The aim behind this system is to have one that runs everywhere.

Smartphones that are powered by Ice-Cream-Sandwich systems will have enhancements that were previously introduced in Android Honeycomb, Google’s operating system for tablets.

The features will include:

  • Holographic user interfaces
  • Even better multitasking abilities
  • The ability to connect the smartphone with a USB device like a mouse or Xbox controller

This release has been highly anticipated by the Android developer community. The Android Honeycomb made its debut on Motorola’s Xoom tablet in February and showed off a number of enhancements that were new to the Android platform. Developers have been waiting for Google to release the source code so that these features can be used in smartphones but Google refused to do so.

Google issued a statement saying:

While we’re excited to offer these new features to Android tablets, we have more work to do before we can deliver them to other device types including phones. Until then, we’ve decided not to release Honeycomb to open source.

Eric Smidt, Google’s chairman, also justified their reasons for holding out at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. He said they were combining the features from Gingerbread, the newest software release for Android smartphones, and Android first.

Ken Dulaney, a Gartner Research analyst also spoke of Google to Wired.com, saying:

Google is making sure that the OEMs [original equipment manufacturers], who are all desperate to differentiate their products, won’t take the Honeycomb source code and slap it on a bunch of bad products…The bottom line is, this is the right way to do it.

Android made its debut in 2008 and has been extremely popular ever since with over 4.5 billion apps from the Android Market installed.

Google will be releasing their new Honeycomb software, version 3.1, soon and the owners of Verizon’s Motorola Xoom tablet will be the first to get it.

Getting started

Online casinos go out of their way to let potential players know about the convenience and ease of use that they will experience when they sign up, and that all begins with the registration process which, at Platinum Play is as easy as one, two, three.

The first step is deciding how you would like to play the casino, as there are two online methods available. Instant Play is exactly what it sounds like, requiring nothing but the click of the mouse to get you started. There are no downloads required, and you will be instantly into the gaming action, although with fewer games available than the full download option. This may be a good option for a player on the go who will be playing on more than one computer, but for those who want all the games and are only planning to play from a single location, then the full casino download is recommended.

Step 2 requires players to register an account at Platinum Play, and again there are options available here. Those player looking to jump right in and play should sign up for a real money account, which will make them eligible to win all the huge jackpots on offer at PP. New players, and those who would like to learn the ins and outs of the casino and games are encouraged to set up a practice play account, which they can easily change to a real money account when they are comfortable.

The final step, assuming the player has opted for a real money account, is to deposit funds into the account via one of the numerous payment options that Platinum Play has for its users, all of which are completely safe and secure.

There is one more step, and that is to get right into the gaming action and win some money. You’ll never forget that first big win at the Platinum Play online casino, I know I haven’t.

Game tips

There are so many games to choose from at the Platinum Play casino, that there are times when I am at a loss which one to play first. I’m sure I can’t be alone in that thinking and I wonder how many of those good people avoid certain games because they don’t quite know how to play them, or fully understand how a particular game works.

I realize that I am fortunate because I have been around casinos long enough to have a decent working knowledge of each and every game available; no small task given the fantastic job that Platinum Play have done in compiling that amazing selection in their casino.

There are different tips for all the games that will help, but most of those will centre around money management, with the general rule of thumb being that you shouldn’t bet any more than 5% of your bankroll on any given hand or spin of the reels. Doing so gives you the best chance to make your money last longer and be a winner over the long haul.

If there’s a game you’ve been wanting to try, but were afraid to give it a shot because of a lack of knowledge (for me it was roulette), then use the free play option that Platinum Play has on offer, as this is the best way to learn the ins and outs of any game without spending a penny of your own money.
Another good tip comes when playing slots for the first time. The newer video slot games are multi-line, feature laden games that might seem overwhelming at first glance. The truth is that they are all incredibly easy to play, but anyone who feels intimidated by the animated graphics and lightning-fast game action, should look at taking it down a notch and starting out with one of Platinum Play’s great 3-reel pub slots. It’s a great way to learn the ins and outs of slots before moving up to the mega-jackpot big boys.

Perhaps the best game tip that I can give is to advise you all to try out every one of the amazing games available at Platinum Play, but be warned, it might take a while.

Celebs who play casino games

Hollywood loves to use casinos and gambling as a backdrop for countless movies, and it would appear that what shows up on the screen has actually spun off into real life, as more and more celebrities are starting to show an interest in gambling, with some even cashing out big in the real world. Take actress Jennifer Tilly who walked away with $158,625 and a World Series of Poker bracelet after beating out a field of over 600 other ladies in a Texas Hold ‘Em event.

Perhaps it’s being in a gambling based movie that creates the interest for some, and a good example of that are Matt Damon and Edward Norton  who are now considered regular poker players after they starred in the poker movie “Rounders”. Damon and his buddy Ben Affleck have actually spent a fair amount of time learning the ins and outs of the game with poker stars Phil Helmuth and Annie Duke, with Ben actually becoming good enough to win a couple of live tournaments.

It seems to be young Hollywood that is most in love with gambling as Leo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are also regular players. Having said that, there are a couple of older TV stars who regularly hit the tables, with Jason Alexander and Gabe Kaplan, of “Welcome Back Kotter “, fame heavily involved in the poker world.

Big name sports stars have also been spotted at the casino, with former NBA stars Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley regulars on the Vegas scene. While most seem to prefer the table games, golfer John Daly has a real love for the slots and has reportedly bet up to $5,000 per spin at his favourite machines. Sports stars thrive on the thrill of the game and I’m sure that’s why they love the excitement of gambling, and even outside the Vegas lights there are stars who love the casinos of Europe, such as English footballer Wayne Rooney.

While we regular folks may not be able to afford the high stakes played by these celebs, we can still feel like we are special by becoming part of the Platinum Play Rewards programme.
