Back in the mid-20th Century, the joke went: “What do you give a man who has everything?”
Alas, the days of the first antibiotic being a cure-all that easily took care of all kinds of dreaded infections are long gone. These days, the best we can give a chap who has everything is one heck of a send-off.
But on a less morbid note, when it’s time to find gifts for a friend who is well supplied with all the gizmos, gadgets and mod cons, finding something unusual, amusing or useful that he doesn’t already have is a mission.
Here are five out-of-the-ordinary suggestions:
#1 – Bike-Mounted Phone Holder
Fashioned from steel, aluminium and thick, strong rubber, this is a must for the keen cyclist. The holder clips round the handlebar mount, and then a smartphone can be strapped in with a sturdy double-rubber clasp that leaves most of the touchscreen free. So the rider can manipulate map apps, make calls, etc. with just one hand.
The Nite Ize HandleBand is a doubly useful model: there’s a crafty bottle opener in the base, for that after-ride reward.
#2 – Elgato Smart Key
The Elgato Smart Key is simply a small, blue-and-black disc that attaches to his keyring. Then it links to his phone – so if he’s about to leave his keys behind somewhere, his phone will tell him. The gadget also lets him locate lost keys with his phone – this is a gift that prevents a lot of future swearing.
#3 – The Onewheel
Both city commuting and dirt road recreation are no problem with the Onewheel – basically a single-wheel electric skateboard. It’s a big, fat wheel, however – which allows it to take on a wider range of terrain. The electrically balanced board allows the rider to place his feet on either side, and navigate just by leaning. And he doesn’t have to be a wiry, lightweight teenager to get the hang of it, which is a relief.

#4 – Necktie Travel Roll
One item frequent business travellers always find impossible to pack without creasing is a necktie. The genius Necktie Travel Roll solves that problem: no bigger than an obsolete camera film case, it rolls up ties for crease-free travel. So he won’t have to hang it in the hotel shower for a steaming in future…
#5 – The Phone Steriliser
And we’re back to nasty bugs and face-eating germs… But it’s an unpleasant truth that your phone, like an ATM keyboard, is one of the most bacteria-infested items you’ll touch on a daily basis. So the PhoneSoap 2.0 Phone Sanitiser and Universal Charger is the perfect gift for a germophobe who has everything he likes and doesn’t want to catch anything else…
It uses UV light to kill more than 99 per cent of the germs on a smartphone while it charges. Our only question is: when will someone invent one for ATMs?
