Sony’s new animated film “Hotel Transylvania” set a new record for a September opening in US and Canadian theatres, making $43 million.
The previous record was held by “Sweet Home Alabama” in 2002, which made a debut amount of $35.7 million.
“Hotel Transylvania” is about a get together of famous monsters hosted by Dracula. Dracula invites characters like Frankenstein, the Mummy and some werewolves to celebrate his daughter’s birthday. Things get more frightening when an uninvited guest in the form of a human falls for Dracula’s daughter. Voice-overs feature popular actors like Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Selena Gomez.
The film was projected to make $25.8 million over its opening weekend, and far exceeded these expectations.
Another Sony film made it into second place over this opening weekend. “Looper” is a sci-fi thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis and made $21.2 million, which is significantly more than the $17 million that it was projected to make. The film was also a hit with reviewers. 93% of film critics who reviewed it gave it the thumbs up, as did 91% of audiences.
